The oft familiar verse, “And the dragon was wroth with the woman, and went to make war with the remnant of her seed, which keep the commandments of God, and have the testimony of Jesus Christ.” Rev 12:17 (KJV), is so full of many truths yet those who have not been given the Spirit of Prophecy will not understand this! They will miss several points, which I will enumerate, to demonstrate what they overlook:
- Verse 14 tells us how much time must transpire: time, times and a dividing of times, or 42 months, or 1,260 days (prophetic language = years), beginning at 538 AD and going until 1844.
- Verse 15 tells of false doctrine (flood) which will try Christ’s Church during this time which was the false day of worship (Sunday), state of the dead (upon death going to either heaven or hell).
- Verse 16 that help will come from here, from the people given the truth to combat this evil influence.
- Verse 17 identifies who Christ’s Church is: those who “keep” the commandments of God, not of Christ, not of the Apostles, but God’s Commandments of which there were only ten which were written by God’s own finger. The second qualifier is, they will have the testimony of Jesus Christ. Not only His words but what He did, too. Did not Christ keep the Commandments of God, all ten? He most surely did, and those who are the “true” members of the Church of Christ, will do likewise.
Too much emphasis is placed upon what the Apostles did and not upon what Christ did. It is said the Apostles began worshipping on the first day of the week, Sunday. There is not one iota of Scriptural evidence to indicate they did anything which contradicted Christ, but let’s suppose they did, for one moment, who would you rather follow? Christ of the Apostles? Jesus said, “I have kept my Father’s commandments.” (John 15:10)
The clue to who is Christ’s “true” church will be readily understood if one examines the twelfth chapter of Revelations. When you understand Christ’s Church will go through a most difficult period of time, 1,260 years to the point where it becomes polluted with the corruption of the enemy, from its very beginning as per the words of Christ, “Nevertheless I have somewhat against thee, because thou hast left thy first love. Remember therefore from whence thou art fallen, and repent, and do the first works; or else I will come unto thee quickly, and will remove thy candlestick out of his place, except thou repent.” Rev 2:4-5 (KJV)
Christ was very clear, His church had fallen away and given up its first love. This did not occur AT the time of the Apostles but afterward because those dear Apostles kept true to the “testimony of Jesus” and they kept God’s Ten Commandments. They were not polluted with the false doctrine of satan because they’d received the power of the Holy Spirit on the Day of Pentecost, but unfortunately, very close after the last’s departure, Christ’s Church fell into disarray, but not to worry because it was in 1844 when Christ’s Church received light which would prepare it for Christ’s eventual second coming.
The very disciple who wrote this also wrote, ““Many deceivers are entered into the world, who confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh. This is a deceiver and an antichrist. Look to yourselves, that we lose not those things which we have wrought, but that we receive a full reward. Whosoever transgresseth, and abideth not in the doctrine of Christ, hath not God. He that abideth in the doctrine of Christ, he hath both the Father and the Son. If there come any unto you, and bring not this doctrine, receive him not into your house, neither bid him God speed: for he that biddeth him God speed is partaker of his evil deeds” (2 John 7-11). Yes, John saw the errors creeping into the church and wanted to warn us, by his letter to his dear friend, to give us counsel on how to avoid and to remember what it was Christ taught because he knew, by the Spirit of Prophecy, what many would claim the Apostles taught differently from Christ, but they did not. It was those who would come afterward.
The facts are clear and they are true. If you do not keep the Commandments of “God”, you cannot possibly have the testimony of Jesus Christ, therefore you are none of His and will suffer eternal loss. The time is NOW for you to give up your traditions and false beliefs and step into the light of truth, my friends. Today is that day, for you.
In this age of boasted liberality these words would be branded as bigotry. But the apostle teaches that while we should manifest Christian courtesy, we are authorized to call sin and sinners by their right names—that this is consistent with true charity. While we are to love the souls for whom Christ died, and labor for their salvation, we should not make a compromise with sin. We are not to unite with the rebellious, and call this charity. God requires His people in this age of the world to stand, as did John in his time, unflinchingly for the right, in opposition to soul-destroying errors. (The Sanctified Life, Chapter 8.)
