There are many who believe and refer to Saturday as being a “Jewish” Sabbath, and because they desire to be separate from them will refer to Sunday as being the “Christian” Sabbath. Both groups are wrong! The “Sabbath” is neither Jewish nor Christian, and to think it is shows how little you know of Scripture.
The obvious question is asked, “When Sabbath first began?”
“Thus the heavens and the earth were finished, and all the host of them. And on the seventh day God ended His work which He had made; and He rested on the seventh day from all His work which He had made. And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it He had rested from all His work which God created and made.” Gen. 2:1-3 (KJV)
Allow me to support my proof with this verse:
“If thou turn away thy foot from the sabbath, from doing thy pleasure on MY holy day; and call the sabbath a delight, the holy of the Lord, honourable; and shalt honour HIM, not doing thine own ways, nor finding thine own pleasure, nor speaking thine own words…” Isaiah 58:13 (KJV)
And concluding, with Jesus speaking:
“And He (Christ) said unto them, The sabbath was made for man, and not man for the sabbath: Therefore the Son of man is Lord also of the sabbath.” Mark 2:27-28 (KJV)
Gen. 2 makes it clear it was something He did—first. Although, and this might be news for many, Adam and Eve were around, they did not keep the first Sabbath because it was NOT the Sabbath! Let’s throw in the obvious reason, well, they hadn’t done any work, having been created the day before. However, they spent the day, with God, and He was not doing any work! He was resting. AFTER the Sabbath concluded, the Bible says He “blessed and sanctified” it, meaning He made it “holy” and “set apart” from the other days of the week, and having been our example, THEN Adam and Eve would follow every Sabbath afterward.
Were Adam and his lovely wife Jewish? No. Where they Christian? No. Who did the Sabbath belong exclusively? Well, God claims it as His own in Isaiah 58. He calls it, “My” holy day. Not Jewish nor Christian.
Who did God make the Sabbath for? Mark answers quite clearly, the Sabbath was made for me, because I’m Jewish? No. Because I’m a Christian? No.
And what day IS the Sabbath?
“Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy. Six days shalt thou labour, and do all thy work: But the seventh day is the sabbath of the Lord thy God: in it thou shalt not do any work, thou, nor thy son, nor thy daughter, thy manservant, nor thy maidservant, nor thy cattle, nor thy stranger that is within thy gates: For in six days the Lord made heaven and earth, the sea, and all that in them is, and rested the seventh day: wherefore the Lord blessed the sabbath day, and hallowed it.” Ex 20:8-11 (KJV)
Seventh day of the week. And reckoning the day as God so ordained, the “evening (dark) precedes the day (light), so from Friday sunset until Saturday sunset is the holy, sanctified and blessed day of the Lord, or, the true “Lord’s Day”. Not from midnight to midnight, as if Adam and Eve had a Timex or Rolex during those days; however, they could easily ascertain when the day began by looking at the sun and not by honoring the sun, as so many do, in practice and principal when they head for the churches on Sunday morning! That’s right, you are worshipping the sun, sun-worshippers when you do what you do, and who is the blame for this? Your enemy and mine, satan. It is just I don’t do nor desire to follow his worship day.
So, why do you?
