The “he” in the quoted text of Scripture below pertains to Christ. Yes, Christ is the reason for many people to stumble. Yet, many cannot see how Christ causes two types of stumbling, which I will explain.
“And he shall be for a sanctuary; but for a stone of stumbling and for a rock of offence to both the houses of Israel, for a gin and for a snare to the inhabitants of Jerusalem.” Isaiah 8:14 (KJV)
The Israelites stumbled by holding onto the form of godliness, the laws regarding righteousness. When one broke the Ten Commandment Law, there was the so-called law of Moses, which they followed in order to gain their righteousness back. Christ hadn’t come, but He had given them a method to follow until He came. When Christ came, they were so bent in continuing their method of righteousness, they could not accept what He presented to them. They wanted to continue exercising what they’d done for over a thousand years because it became a custom, to them, so they held onto their own form of getting right with God and not the prescribed method Christ offered them.
However, there is another way Christ has been a “stumbling-stone” for many Christians today. While one group has rejected Christ because of the law of Moses, Christians reject the Law of God, the Ten Commandments, thinking they’re receiving their righteousness through Christ—alone, without the need of the Law. This can never be! One cannot receive righteousness without having done something wrong. If you throw away that which shows you are wrong, then how will you know if you are wrong? If you cannot possibly know what you have done wrong, what is the purpose of Christ? There is no need for Christ if there is no Law. If there is no Law, no need for Christ, then one is under the belief they are righteous and not sinners, and the righteous have no need to be saved from sin, because they’re not sinners! A terrible position to take.
So, on the one hand Christ is rejected because of one law, and on the other, Christ is refused because of another Law! Oh, what a terrible lot has befallen mankind.
It is time man, no, Christians come to the recognition Christ is really the “stepping-stone”. He’s the foundation, the ROCK, and does not cause any who seek after Him properly from falling because of stumbling.
Stop stumbling and gain a foothold upon Christ.
