A young man responded to my post, which is quite excellent and I’ll share:

“I so much cherish the writings of Mrs. White. The fact remains that there are spiritual messages and personal opinions. In no case will the spiritual messages err because they are from God but personal opinion may err because they are from sinful man. Mrs. White was never a 100% perfect why it was because she was born of human and was born a sinner. I stand to be corrected all actors and actresses in the bible did not have 100% personal opinions correct. From Abraham to John the revelator, they all made human mistakes. I have vowed never to accept any opinion that is not bible based, practised and supported. Adventists have relied too much on her writings and become so lazy in reading the bible. I had the same problem of christmas with my first Elder when I walked away from the church carol service. He came to me with Mrs. White write up about christmas and I told him point black to proof to me the basis for that opinion from the bible. All he said was that was I doubting the write up of Mrs. White. For cry loud, Mrs. White was a sinner like my self who was saved not by CHEAP GRACE but by the loving hand of our saviour. I can do what Mrs. White did for God and even more if I totally submit myself to God to use me just as she submitted her self to God. She is not a subtitle to God neither is her write ups subtitle to the bible. God help His church. The Remnant from the REMNANTS is now manifesting. God bless.”

He makes several good point to which I will elaborate, and actually, I don’t because he does a tremendous job in explaining the problem, not new, but for many years I have thought what is wrong with us, as a church.

When I first got on Facebook, one of my friends was always posting memes and so I asked her why did she do this?  The statement which appears in the area where we post used to say, “What do you think?”  (It doesn’t anymore and perhaps for good reason, because nobody thinks anymore!) And it is my contention, we can’t anymore, therefore most posts are simply photos with captions.  “Thinking” is a long-gone art and for Adventists, there is a tendency to have (1) Mrs. White and THEN (2) the Bible.  So, we don’t need to think about Number 2 because Number 1 has done all the thinking for us and we become mere spouts of number 1 because Number 2 requires thinking!

Case in point:  Number 1 tells us not to have anything to do with ornamented trees in our abodes.  So, when you question an Adventist, their first response will be:  Number 2 says…  This is the defense.  So, we just overlook Number 1, rely on Number 2 to do our thinking regardless of what Number 1 stated, which should be Number 1, the rule and guide for our lives.  Where is the thinking involved?  Sadly, there is none.

The Bible (Number 1) states:

“But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give an answer to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear.” 1 Peter 3:15 (KJV)

One cannot offer a “reason” and one cannot express their “hope” unless one has the ability to “think” for themselves, AFTER one has been given all the information to sort through.  I just experienced the situation a moment ago with another friend who wanted to challenge the above commenter’s point.  How did he choose to do it?  By copying/pasting Sis. White! I had to delete because here a young man was using his brain after reading and coming up with what he thinks, whether right or wrong, but it is his thinking and he’s held accountable with his thinking and another can’t think so he takes the easier route and do, what?  Will his accountability be Mrs. White?  Will that be his answer and hope?  Should the text now read:

“But sanctify the Lord God in your hearts: and be ready always to give a quotation from Sister White to every man that asketh you a reason of the hope that is in you with meekness and fear.” Bro. Royism 3:15 (RMV- Roy Martin Version)!!!

Humorous at best.  Shameful at the most.  If nothing else, THINK!  God gave each of us a brain.  And like most muscles, which it is, if we choose not to use it, daily, then we will lose the potential we have available and we’ll become worthless in our experience and even more so in our witness.
